We’ve all had kids markup walls. Thankfully, there are several ways you can effectively remove pens from the wall — and most of them are all natural!

No matter how closely we watch our children, they still manage to make messes every once in a while. Unfortunately, some messes are harder to clean up than others, especially when they involve writing instruments like pens or markers.

In many cases, cleaning pen marks off the wall can be one of the most challenging chores of all because you want to remove the pen without messing up the paint. Thankfully, there are several ways you can effectively remove pens from the wall — and most of them are all-natural!

Although this may sound silly, the experts at Marc Poulos Painting say toothpaste can actually remove pen from walls without damaging the paint. Whitening toothpaste usually works best, but any basic white toothpaste will work in a pinch.

To remove pen from the wall with toothpaste, add a small amount of toothpaste to a soft cloth or towel, then wipe the toothpaste onto the wall using a circular motion. It's important to not rub the ink directly with a cloth or even your hand as this will not help remove it but instead make it worse. However, using the circular motion with the toothpaste-covered cloth will help.

Once the toothpaste dries, you can use a warm washcloth to wipe away the residue. This may also help remove any last remnants of the pen too.

Unfortunately, some types of ink stain more than others, which means toothpaste won't always do the trick. In these instances, the team at Hunker recommends using rubbing alcohol instead.

To use rubbing alcohol to remove pen from the wall, use a clean white cloth and dampen it with isopropyl alcohol. Then, dab the stain with the rubbing alcohol until the pen marks begin to disappear. Remember to not rub, but rather dab or use a circular motion.

Don't have rubbing alcohol available? You can also try hand sanitizer or hairspray that contains alcohol. To use hand sanitizer, simply follow the same steps as you would with the rubbing alcohol. For hairspray, spray the entire area with the pen marks thoroughly with your hairspray that contains alcohol. Then, use a clean white cloth to wipe the area. Since both hairspray and hand sanitizer contain less alcohol than straight rubbing alcohol, you may need to redo the process several times.

While some types of pen are fairly easy to remove, others (like permanent marker) can be a bit more stubborn. If the above suggestions do not work, Anisha Nair with First Cry Parenting suggests these additional methods:

If all else fails, there are commercial cleaners out there that are made to remove pen marks. Or, if you're really struggling, you can always make your kids repaint the area they marked up!

Yes, I'm a hot mess mom, and honestly? I'm OK with that. I know what matters most, and it isn't Pinterest-worthy Valentines or putting makeup on.
